I am trying to establish the descent of Jonathan PEPPLE, b. 18 Aug 1821 FrederickCo, MD, probably in Taneytown area which subsequently became part of CarrollCo. In his Civil War pension application, Jonathan stated that his parents were John PEPPLE and Sophia HOVER. Jonathan told grandson Harry Pepple that he went to school in Md. for the first time when he was 12 years old. He felt too old and went until noon and left. He stayed with a man he met until he was 19. Then he went to Penn. His mother died and his father remarried soon after he left; a half-brother of this union was named John after his father. (This half-brother later came up from Texas to visit Jonathan in Kansas, although Harry said that the man's name was Dan PEPPLE.) Jonathan worked in a saw mill in Penn. He met Rebecca Smith in Bedford Co., where her father owned a tavern. The couple went to church together on a mule. The couple was married in Bedford Co., by Rev. Fishburn. I believe Jonathan and his father John must have been descended from Johan Peter PEPPLE who arrived Philadelphia 25 Sep 1749 on the ship "Ranier" and bought "The Meadows", 100 A., on the Great Pipe Creek, FrederickCo, 2 May 1765. Johan Peter had 1 child, William, who came to America with his father, married Susannah, and had descent: William Jr., Johannes, and Abraham. William Sr., sold part of "The Meadows" to his step-mother Ma gdalena in 1769. He was naturalized in 1772 and served as a Captain during the Revolutionary War in the company of Major Shows. William's son, Johannes, may be the father of my John PEPPLE, particularly since Johannes died in Colerain Twp., Bedford, PA. in Feb 1817. However, his will does not list John. Any information on the link between my John and Johan Peter and William would be appreciated. Harold Davey
